Start with the reason you are switching
A renewal price, a Mac requirement and an unsupported automation dependency are different selection problems. List the hosts, session files, keyboard maps, printers, macros and programs that call your emulator before choosing a replacement. Include the people who own those workflows; a connection test alone does not establish migration compatibility.
Reflection appears in older documentation under Attachmate and Micro Focus names, while the current product belongs to Rocket Software. Keep the exact product and version in your inventory. Reflection Desktop and Rocket Terminal Emulator (formerly BlueZone) are distinct products, so a feature described for one should not be assumed for the other.
Options to compare
On a small screen, swipe the table to read all columns.
| Option | Platform and scope | Buying path | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| WND Terminal | Native Windows, Mac and Linux; customer-hosted browser gateway for IBM and VT profiles | Desktop $69 or Enterprise $75 per user per year, billed annually; 100-user commercial minimum. Personal Free has separate eligibility. | Import representative sessions, key maps and macros; prove the actual host workflows. |
| x3270 family | Platform and interface depend on the chosen family member | Open-source packages; check the selected distribution and license. | Choose graphical, console or scripted access; validate TLS and your maintenance process. |
| IBM Personal Communications | Windows terminal-emulation environment | Check existing IBM Host Access Client Package entitlement or obtain an IBM quote. | PCOMM automation, keyboard maps, host printing, SNA dependencies and deployment. |
| IBM Host On-Demand | Web-to-host access; verify the chosen managed or Java delivery model | Available separately or in IBM host-access packages; confirm entitlement and infrastructure. | TN3270E, TN5250 or VT sessions, client runtime requirements and server administration. |
| Rocket Secure Host Access | Desktop, web or hybrid enterprise host access | Request a quote for the relevant edition, identity controls and deployment. | IAM integration, MFA, gateway requirements, automation migration and total contract cost. |
| Rocket Terminal Emulator / BlueZone | Existing Rocket TE desktop/display and printer environments; edition matters | Confirm current new-sale availability and lifecycle with Rocket; do not assume legacy terms still apply. | BlueZone session files, scripts, keyboard maps and any browser or management components. |
| Rocket Rumba+ Desktop | Rumba desktop host-access estate | Ask Rocket to confirm current availability, support and the applicable migration offer. | Rumba macros, developer interfaces, modernized controls and printer workflows. |
| Rocket Extra! X-treme | Windows access to IBM, UNIX and Linux hosts | Confirm current sales and lifecycle; an existing data sheet is not a new-customer quote. | Extra! Basic macros, Office integration and centrally deployed keyboard/session settings. |
| Rocket HostExplorer | Windows host-connectivity estate; verify the exact package | Confirm current sales, entitlement and support directly with Rocket. | HostExplorer profiles, Hummingbird Basic dependencies, migration tools and required host types. |
| ZOC | Windows and macOS | Commercial product with a vendor evaluation download; use the current vendor price and license. | TN3270/TN5250 coverage, key remapping, scripts, IND$FILE and your chosen host configuration. |
| IBM i Access Client Solutions | Java-based Windows, Mac and Linux client for IBM i | Check IBM i software-maintenance and 5250 entitlement requirements with IBM. | Relevant for a 5250-only estate; it is not a 3270 replacement for IBM Z applications. |
When WND Terminal is worth evaluating
Evaluate WND Terminal when your team needs native Windows, Mac or Linux access, a customer-hosted browser gateway for supported profiles, or an enterprise migration that includes session imports and existing automation. Desktop is $69 per user per year and Enterprise is $75, each with a 100-user minimum. Those are WND Software list prices, not an estimate of any competitor’s contract.
Bring representative .rd3x and .rd5x files, keyboard maps and actual macros. WND Terminal runs Reflection Basic and VBA through its own engine and reports unsupported lines. Test the real procedures and external dependencies; support for a language does not guarantee that every macro or third-party integration will run unchanged. Read the detailed WND Terminal versus Reflection comparison.
When an open-source client may be enough
The x3270 family is an established choice to evaluate for individual 3270 access and scripted use. Choose the appropriate family member and check its current packaging, security configuration and maintenance process. If you do not need an enterprise migration service or central controls, starting with a free client may be a sensible use of time. Do not treat its availability as proof that a legacy VBA or COM workflow has a direct replacement.
When to keep a familiar commercial environment
IBM Personal Communications remains relevant to a Windows estate with PCOMM-specific dependencies. Reflection itself may remain the right choice when the cost of changing deeply embedded automation exceeds the expected benefit. Rocket Terminal Emulator is another commercial comparison for teams looking beyond Reflection, while ZOC offers Windows and Mac terminal access with its own scripting and configuration model. Ask each vendor to demonstrate the requirements that matter to your organization.
Run a fair migration test
- Choose a normal interactive workflow, a keyboard-intensive workflow and an automated procedure.
- Test host connection, certificate handling, screen sizes, keys, printing and file transfer where used.
- Run the actual macros and programs that depend on the emulator. Record unsupported calls and required changes.
- Deploy to a representative managed computer and test locked policy, updates and user support.
- Compare the complete operating cost, including internal migration work and any separate products, using the quotes that apply to your estate.
Keep the acceptance criteria and rollback procedure with the results. The useful outcome is a tested fit for your applications, not a feature checklist with every box marked.

Which alternatives fit the same job?
For IBM Z applications, start with 3270 or TN3270E support. For IBM i, start with 5250. A product that covers only IBM i is not a substitute for a mainframe session, even when both applications use a green screen. IBM i Access Client Solutions belongs in a 5250-only evaluation; separate that decision from a mixed-host Reflection estate.
Next distinguish installed clients from server-delivered access. IBM Host On-Demand, WND Terminal’s customer-hosted gateway and Rocket’s web or hybrid options introduce server and identity work that a desktop-only client may not require. Compare the whole deployment: operating systems, runtime dependencies, gateways, identity integration, printing and the people who maintain it. Browser delivery does not remove those responsibilities.
Should you move to another Rocket product?
Rocket Secure Host Access is worth including when centralized identity and a desktop, web or hybrid estate are requirements. The older Rocket product names in the table are also useful when inventorying existing installations and contracts. They are distinct products, and their historical capabilities do not establish current new-sale availability or the terms of a migration offer. Ask Rocket for the lifecycle notice and a quote for your exact version and target edition before basing a renewal decision on them.
Keeping an existing client can be a reasonable outcome if it meets the required security policy and avoids a costly automation rewrite. Measure that cost with actual dependencies and support dates. Do not count a familiar product name as proof that a different edition runs the same VBA, Basic, COM or printer workflow.
What changes for users on day one?
Use the same application, host account and permitted test data on the old and new clients. Ask an operator to navigate the sign-on and ordinary transaction using the familiar keys. Include a protected-field mistake, a rejected value, a print task and a return to the original menu. Record which keys, dialogs and screen layouts changed and whether the operator needs new instructions.
For WND Terminal, assess Modern view, Capture all pages and Fill from Excel as separate workflow choices after the ordinary terminal path succeeds. These tools do not change what the host application accepts. A more convenient screen is useful only if the required transaction, cancellation and recovery paths still work.
