WND Terminal now connects to UNIX hosts, runs your Extra! and Reflection macros, and runs on Linux

Most companies that move to a new emulator keep a few seats of the old one. They’re for the UNIX team, a folder of Extra! macros, or the claims program that talks to the emulator through EHLLAPI. WND Terminal 1.0.282, out today, handles those too.

In a proof of value, the 3270 and 5250 screens usually move without trouble. The harder part tends to be a group that also uses Reflection for a Linux host, or an Excel workbook that drives Extra! every night. This release is for them.

More hosts in the same app

UNIX and Linux over SSH and Telnet

Choose UNIX / Linux (SSH) or VT (Telnet) on the connect page and WND Terminal is a VT100, VT220 and VT320 terminal, with xterm colors, the mouse for programs like htop and mc, and 5,000 lines of scrollback. It signs in with your ssh-agent, a key file or a password, and checks the host’s key before anything is sent. A changed key is refused. IT can list the keys it trusts and the hosts people may reach. PuTTY saved sessions and Reflection’s .rdox VT documents import, and macros, the automation API, session recording, masking and the audit log all work on these sessions. It works in the desktop app and in WND Terminal in a browser.

Unisys, HP, Tandem and airline hosts

WND Terminal now has Unisys T27 for ClearPath MCP and UTS 60 for OS 2200, HP 700/92 for the HP 3000, the 6530 for Tandem and HPE NonStop, and airline ALC agent sets over MATIP. Each has its own keys and status line, and macros and Fill from Excel work on them. We built these terminals from the vendors’ public manuals and tested them against simulated hosts. Tell us your host during the proof of value and we’ll confirm it with you.

Arabic, Hebrew and Thai

Arabic (420), Hebrew (424, 803 and 12712) and Thai (838 and 1160) host code pages work in 3270 and 5250 sessions, the way IBM’s own emulators handle them. Screens can be drawn right to left with Ctrl+Alt+S, with Field Reverse and Push for typing. Arabic letters take their shape as they’re typed, and Thai vowels and tone marks are drawn on their letters.

Macros, programs and files

Your existing macros run as they are

Import an Extra! Basic, Reflection Basic, HostExplorer Basic or PowerTerm PSL macro, or the Reflection Desktop session document that holds your VBA, and WND Terminal runs it on the live session. It has its own interpreter for the Basic these emulators share and maps their objects, such as Extra!’s Screen and Reflection’s IbmScreen, onto the session. On Windows, macros that also fill Excel through CreateObject keep doing so. A line that uses something WND Terminal doesn’t have, such as a custom dialog box, is listed with its line number. The Migration readiness report checks every macro on a share the same way.

EHLLAPI, COM and .NET

Programs written for PCOMM, Extra! or Reflection keep working without changes. WND Terminal ships 32-bit and 64-bit EHLLAPI and WinHLLAPI DLLs under the names programs load, COM objects with the Extra!, PCOMM (autECL) and Reflection object models for VBA, VBScript and PowerShell, and a .NET library for C#, UiPath and Power Automate. IT turns them on with MSI properties, and they never replace another vendor’s files, so both products can stay installed while people move. Password fields read as blanks and every program that connects is in the audit log.

FTP, FTPS and SFTP built in

A file transfer client for the jobs people used Reflection FTP or BlueZone Secure FTP for. It lists z/OS data sets and PDS members with their attributes, submits JCL and reads JES job output, and handles IBM i libraries, members and save files. Transfers resume, IT decides which protocols, hosts and folders are allowed, and every file sent or received is in the audit log. It works in the browser too.

Rumba profiles, through Reflection Desktop

Rumba+ keeps its profiles in a binary format Rocket doesn’t publish, so WND Terminal still doesn’t read them directly. Reflection Desktop opens them and saves them as .rd3x and .rd5x files, and WND Terminal imports those. The readiness report explains the steps for every Rumba profile it finds. Rumba .rmc macros still need a person.

More places to run it

Linux desktops

WND Terminal comes as a .deb, an .rpm and an AppImage, each for x64 and arm64, with the same features, policy settings and license as on Windows and Mac. IT puts the policy in /etc/wnd-terminal/policy.json. Each release is tested on Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 and Debian 12.

Phones and tablets

On an iPhone, iPad or Android device, WND Terminal in a browser switches to a touch layout. A key bar carries Enter, Tab, PF1 to PF24 and the PA keys. Tap a field to type in it and pinch to zoom, and the phone’s keyboard never covers the cursor. Scanners that type, such as Zebra’s, put barcodes straight into the field at the cursor, and Chrome and Edge on Android can scan with the camera. People can add it to the home screen, where it opens in its own window.

A terminal inside your own web apps

The embed kit puts a live WND Terminal session in a customer portal, a CRM or a help desk tool. Your server signs a short-lived token for the person who is signed in, and the gateway shows the terminal only in the pages IT lists. Your page can read the screen, type and react when it changes, as far as IT allows. The script comes from your own gateway.

Same rules as always

Each new capability follows the policy and the audit log like everything else. IT can turn off SSH, Telnet, plain FTP, the older macros, their use of other programs and camera scanning, one setting at a time, from Group Policy, Intune, a Mac configuration profile or policy.json. Sessions still go straight from the PC, or your own gateway, to your hosts. Nothing is sent to WND Software. Policy settings reference →

What it changes in a switch

Our comparison pages now show these as checks, with the limits written next to them. If a group stayed on Reflection, Extra!, InfoConnect, HostExplorer or PowerTerm because of a UNIX host, its macros or a program that drives it, that group can move with everyone else. See Reflection, Extra!, InfoConnect, HostExplorer, PowerTerm and Rumba, or the full comparison table.

Current customers: WND Terminal 1.0.282 is on the customer portal, with installers for Windows, Mac and Linux. The EHLLAPI DLLs and COM objects stay off until IT turns them on at install. Phones, tablets and the embed kit run through WND Terminal in a browser, which is in the Enterprise plan.
