IBM MQ reason code

MQRC 2045: Option not valid for this object type

MQRC 2045 means an open or close option does not fit the MQ object or queue type. Check object resolution, MQOD fields and dynamic-queue handling.

Other names for this code

Also written as RC2045, reason code 2045, MQ error 2045, MQRC_OPTION_NOT_VALID_FOR_TYPE, 07FD, 0x07FD.

What it means

An option is meaningful for one type of object but not the type actually being opened or closed. For example, output is not an operation on a process object, and deleting a nondynamic queue is not a valid MQCLOSE request.

IBM also documents cases involving remote queue resolution and ObjectQMgrName. The name entered by the program can resolve through aliases, so examine the resolved object as well as the original string.

A troubleshooting example

A reusable cleanup function always requests MQCO_DELETE. It works for the temporary reply queues used in testing, then fails with 2045 when production uses a predefined reply queue. The function should distinguish releasing a handle from deleting an application-created object. Test both queue types and verify the predefined queue still exists after the client exits. This prevents a workaround from weakening the production queue lifecycle or hiding an incorrect assumption in the shared utility.

Common causes

  • A generic open routine applies queue options to a process, namelist or queue-manager object.
  • The program attempts a local inquiry or input operation through an unsuitable remote definition.
  • Cleanup requests dynamic-queue deletion for a predefined queue.

How to find the problem

  1. Record the failing call, object type, full options mask and MQOD names. Avoid logging just the final queue name.
  2. Display the relevant definitions and follow aliases or remote definitions until the effective target and type are clear.
  3. For MQCLOSE, determine whether the handle belongs to a dynamically created queue and which close option was requested.
  4. Compare the requested capability with the object-type rules for that call in the installed MQ documentation.

How to fix it

  • Choose options supported by the actual object type. Do not make every open use the same broad options mask.
  • Correct ObjectQMgrName or queue resolution when the application is targeting the wrong definition. Verify routing with a controlled test.
  • Use deletion close options only for the intended dynamic-queue lifecycle. Keep ordinary handle cleanup separate from object deletion.

What it looks like

Illustrative diagnostic notes; not an IBM message template.
MQCLOSE options: MQCO_DELETE
Target: predefined queue
Reason=2045
Separate closing a handle from deleting a dynamic queue.

Questions

How does 2045 differ from 2046?

2045 concerns options inappropriate for the object type. 2046 concerns invalid options or combinations more generally.

Can aliases cause 2045?

They can affect what object or remote definition is actually used. Follow resolution and inspect MQOD instead of assuming the visible name identifies a local queue.
