Screen history, recent typing and autocomplete

Look back at a screen without paging the host again, and type less on the screens you use every day. It works the same on mainframe (3270) and IBM i (5250) sessions.

In short

WND Terminal keeps the last 100 screens of each session. Press Ctrl+K (⌘K on a Mac) and choose Screen history to go back through them. It also remembers what you typed into each field and suggests it the next time you’re there. Ctrl+Space types the suggestion. Passwords are never kept.

Screen history

WND Terminal keeps each screen once the host has finished sending it and the keyboard is free again. It holds the last 100 screens of every session. Blank screens and exact repeats of the screen before are skipped.

  1. Press Ctrl+K (⌘K on a Mac) and choose Screen history.
  2. The newest screen opens first, with the time it appeared. Press ← to go further back and → to come forward again.
  3. Press Copy this screen to paste its text into a ticket or a spreadsheet.

Looking at history doesn’t send anything to the host, so it’s safe on screens where pressing a key would change data. Fields that hide what’s typed, like passwords, stay hidden.

Recent typing

Recent typing lists what you typed into fields and sent with Enter or a function key, newest first. Each entry shows the field it was typed into and when. Choose Recent typing from Ctrl+K, type a few letters in Find to narrow the list, and press Enter to type the entry again.

  • Up to 200 entries are kept for each session.
  • When you send the same value in the same field again, it moves to the top instead of showing twice.
  • Only what you typed yourself is listed. Rows typed by Fill from Excel, by a macro or by Ask WND aren’t, and they aren’t suggested later.

Suggestions as you type

When the cursor is in a field you’ve typed into before, the rest of your last matching entry appears dimmed after the cursor. Press Ctrl+Space (Control+Space on a Mac) to type it, or keep typing to ignore it.

WND Terminal recognizes a field by the words in front of it on the screen, such as USERID ===> or Policy number. So a user ID you typed on the logon screen is suggested on the logon screen next time, and a policy number is suggested in the policy number field. A suggestion is offered only when it fits in the field and starts with what’s already there.

To turn suggestions off, open Display and clear Suggestions as you type. Screen history and recent typing still work.

Scratch pad

Choose Scratch pad from Ctrl+K to keep notes for a session, such as a job name or a ticket number. Notes are saved on your computer and are there the next time you open that session.

What’s kept, and where

  • Passwords and other hidden fields are never kept or suggested.
  • Screen history and recent typing are held in memory on your computer, for that session. They’re gone when the session closes.
  • None of it is sent to WND Software.
  • Send to help desk can attach the last 5 screens to a ticket, with card numbers and other patterns masked and input fields empty. IT can raise that to 20 with HelpDeskScreens or leave history out of tickets.

Yes. It keeps the last 100 screens of each session. Press Ctrl+K, choose Screen history and use the arrow keys to move back and forward.

Are passwords ever saved or suggested?

No. Hidden fields, such as passwords, are never kept in screen history or recent typing, and they are never suggested.

Is the history still there after I close the session?
