WND Terminal Free is for one person on their own computer: developers, students, contractors and anyone learning the mainframe. It’s the same WND Terminal, with a personal license from portal.wndsoftware.com/free.
Getting it
- Go to portal.wndsoftware.com/free and give your name and email. Any email works.
- Open the link we email you. Download WND Terminal for Windows, Mac or Linux, then click Get my free license.
- Open WND Terminal, click Add a license and choose the license file.
The license runs 90 days. In its last 14 days WND Terminal shows a reminder, and the same page renews it for another 90 days. The app never contacts WND Software to check it, so it works on a closed network too.
What it does and doesn’t do
Everything in WND Terminal works: 3270, IBM i (5250) and UNIX (VT and SSH) sessions, file transfer, macros, your old emulator’s macros, the automation API, Fill from Excel, Capture all pages, Modern view, Explain and Ask WND (with your own AI service).
The limits are about who it’s for:
On a small screen, swipe the table to read all columns.
| The limit | |
|---|---|
| People | One. Your name or email shows in the title bar and in About. |
| Sessions open at once | Four (printer sessions count). |
| Computers an organization manages | It doesn’t run there. See below. |
| WND Terminal in a browser (the gateway) | It doesn’t run there. |
| People at the same company | Up to 10 at a time. The 11th is offered a trial for their team. |
Computers an organization manages
A free license doesn’t count on a computer an organization manages. WND Terminal treats a computer as managed when any of these is true:
- WND Terminal has a policy from IT (Group Policy, a Mac configuration profile, managed app configuration on a phone or tablet, or a
policy.json). - Windows: the computer is joined to an Active Directory domain or to Microsoft Entra ID, or it’s enrolled in device management (Intune or another MDM).
- Mac: the computer is enrolled in device management, or bound to a directory.
- Linux: the computer is joined to a domain (SSSD or Winbind with Kerberos).
On such a computer WND Terminal opens, says so, and offers a trial for your team. A trial or a company license on the same computer is used in place of the free one, so nothing changes for people whose IT team has added a license.
For IT
If someone at your company asks why WND Terminal Free won’t run on their work computer, that’s the reason above. It’s for personal computers. For your team, start a 30-day trial at portal.wndsoftware.com/try, or talk to us.
