# Switch Day: Move Every PC to WND Terminal at Once

Source: https://wndsoftware.com/switch-day

### Every PC switched at once, with people’s sessions already set up

Collect the emulator files from every PC, see who is ready, and deploy the switch pack. When people first open WND Terminal, their sessions, keyboard maps, macros and screen look are already there.

Intune and Configuration Manager
Group Policy
Mac profiles
Passwords never collected
No host names re-entered
Switch day moves every PC from the old emulators to WND Terminal in one go. `wnd-discover` collects each person’s session, keyboard map and macro files from every PC, with stored passwords removed. `wnd-automate` turns them into the switch day report, then into a pack with the policy, the deployment inputs and a set-up file for each person. WND Terminal imports that file on its first start, without asking.

### What each part does

On a small screen, swipe the table to read all columns.

| Program | Where it runs | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `wnd-discover` | Every PC, before WND Terminal is there | Finds the emulators installed and collects each person’s session, keyboard map and macro files, with stored passwords removed. Writes them to a share. |
| `wnd-automate readiness --estate` | Your computer | The switch day report from that share, per computer, per person and per emulator, with the hosts, the macros and how many people are ready. |
| `wnd-automate switch-pack` | Your computer | What you deploy. The policy, the Intune and Configuration Manager inputs, and a set-up file for each person. |

### How a switch day goes

#### Discover

Run `wnd-discover` as SYSTEM on every PC from Intune, Configuration Manager or a Group Policy startup script. It takes a few seconds and writes to a share.

#### Read the report

A one-page summary for leadership, a detail workbook, and lists of people, computers and files that need a person.

#### Close the gaps

Fix files at the source, run discovery again on those PCs and remake the report. It takes about a minute.

#### Make the pack

The policy files with your license key, install and detection scripts, and a `.wndconfig` file for each person.

#### Switch

Deploy WND Terminal. Each import is in the audit log, so you can check it against the report.

### Files from 13 emulators

IBM Personal Communications, IBM i Access Client Solutions, Reflection, EXTRA!, Rumba, BlueZone, HostExplorer, PASSPORT, PowerTerm, TN3270 Plus, QWS3270, Vista tn3270 and tn5250.

#### Every profile on the PC

It runs as SYSTEM, so it reads every user profile, plus the folders all users of the computer share.

#### Only what the importers know

Session, keyboard map and macro files. It skips browser data, caches and pictures, and doesn’t download files that are only in OneDrive.

#### Nothing changed on the PC

It connects to nothing but the share and writes nothing on the PC.

#### Mac and Linux too

It reads `/Users` or `/home`, and the pack carries the setting for Macs in a configuration profile.

### Stored passwords stay behind

Every file is scrubbed before it’s written to the share, the way each format keeps a password.

- Settings named like a password, a secret or a credential lose their values in session files.
- Reflection’s password items and Basic, VBA and PSL assignments such as `Password = "..."` lose the quoted text.
- A file that can’t be checked is left out and listed with the reason.
- The people’s set-up files hold host names, keyboard maps and macros, never a password.

### Questions about switch day

#### Does wnd-discover change anything on the PC?

No. It connects to nothing but the share, needs no policy and no WND Terminal, and writes nothing on the PC.

#### Are passwords collected?

No. Every file is scrubbed before it’s written to the share. A file that can’t be checked, such as a Rumba binary profile or an encrypted Reflection document, is left out and listed with the reason.

#### What happens to people who aren’t ready?

People.csv says who isn’t ready and why, and Needs a person.csv lists their files. Fix them at the source, run wnd-discover again on those PCs and make the report again.

#### Does it work for WND Terminal in a browser?

Yes. The gateway imports each person’s set-up file when they first sign in.
