# MQRC 2012: Environment error

### MQRC 2012: Environment error

MQRC 2012 means an MQ call is not valid in its current environment. Check the runtime, linked adapter, transport and transaction coordinator.

#### Other names for this code

Also written as `RC2012`, `reason code 2012`, `MQ error 2012`, `MQRC_ENVIRONMENT_ERROR`, `07DC`, `0x07DC`.

### What it means

The same MQ API call can be appropriate in one runtime and invalid in another. Reason 2012 directs attention to the execution environment: client versus local bindings, the libraries loaded, and who manages transactions.

Examples in IBM documentation include direct MQ commit or backout in CICS or IMS, inappropriate RRS adapters, MQBEGIN in an MQI client, and features unsupported by a particular client. This is not a general instruction to change permissions or disable security.

#### A troubleshooting example

A utility uses local bindings during development and calls MQBEGIN. Deployment changes the connection to a remote MQI client, but the utility retains the same initialization sequence. Reason 2012 appears even though the server and credentials are correct. Compare the two runtime configurations, then decide how the deployed application should coordinate work. A useful test covers startup, one successful operation and one rollback path under the actual deployment transport. Testing only whether a socket opens would miss the original mistake.

### Common causes

- A program moved from batch into CICS, IMS or a managed application server without changing transaction handling.
- Deployment loaded a different MQ library or adapter from the one used in testing.
- The application selected client transport while requesting a bindings-only operation.

### How to find the problem

- Capture the failing call and the environment that actually executed it. Record operating system, MQ client version and process architecture.
- Compare loaded library paths and connection-factory transport settings with the working deployment. A configuration file alone does not prove what was loaded.
- Check whether a container or transaction manager already owns commit and rollback. Include the adapter used when the program was linked.
- For z/OS, have the systems programmer compare the adapter, address-space type and RRS state against the IBM explanation for the specific call.

### How to fix it

- Use libraries and adapters supported for the deployment environment. Correct the startup path or link configuration, then repeat a small test.
- Use CICS, IMS or the external coordinator for transactions it owns. Do not add direct MQCMIT calls to work around an ownership mismatch.
- Remove or replace an unsupported operation. If a feature requires a different transport, validate that design explicitly rather than changing production connection settings experimentally.

### What it looks like

```text
Illustrative diagnostic notes; not an IBM message template.
Runtime: MQI client
Call: MQBEGIN
Reason: 2012
Check transport and transaction ownership.
```

### Questions

#### Is 2012 an authentication error?

It identifies an environment mismatch. Read the call-specific explanation before changing credentials; MQRC 2035 is the usual authorization reason.

#### Should a CICS application call MQCMIT directly?

CICS manages the unit of work. Follow the CICS transaction model instead of adding independent MQ commit or backout calls.
