### IBM 3151 Terminal Emulator in WND Terminal

Open an IBM 3151 echo-mode Telnet session, try an inquiry and check your application's screen format and keys.

### Supported terminals and connections

On a small screen, swipe the table to read all columns.

| System | Terminal | Connection | Where it runs | Current scope | Release |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [IBM 3151 ASCII Display Station](https://wndsoftware.com/ibm-3151-terminal-emulator) | 3151 echo mode | Telnet | Windows, Mac, Linux | 24×80 native IBM 3151 echo-mode inquiry and key behavior over Telnet. | v1.0.319 |

The current 24×80 echo-mode subset does not include field attributes, block mode, 132-column layouts, programmable function keys or printer functions.

### What the sample does

The software IBM 3151 host echoes an order number and returns an order result in a 24×80 screen.

[Download the compatibility lab](https://wndsoftware.com/downloads/wnd-model-samples.zip) (Python 3 and WND Terminal required)

### Connect to your host

Choose IBM ASCII host (3151), enter the host and port, and confirm the terminal-type value expected by your application.

[Read the connection guide](https://wndsoftware.com/docs/other-terminals)

The software-host examples let you try these workflows now. WND Software checks your application workflows during a proof of value and addresses compatibility differences found.

### Move an existing session

Bring the host address, port, terminal type, key assignments and macros used by your team. Create a WND Terminal connection with the settings above, then run the actual screens and keys your application uses. Check the [session import guide](https://wndsoftware.com/docs/import-other-emulators) for supported source formats; the connection type alone does not prove that an old profile or macro can be imported.

### Check IBM 3151 ASCII against your application

Keep a working session profile and a repeatable test case. Compare what the application receives as well as what the terminal draws. Use the software-host examples as a starting point, then record the results on the actual host before a rollout.

On a small screen, swipe the table to read all columns.

| Application check | What to verify |
| --- | --- |
| Distinguish ASCII from 3270 | Choose the IBM ASCII 3151 profile rather than an IBM Z 3270 connection. Similar vendor names do not imply compatible protocols. |
| Confirm echo behavior | Use the 24 by 80 inquiry sample and compare typed characters, host echo and cursor position with the application expectation. |
| Record terminal identification | Confirm the terminal-type value the host expects. Preserve the working session settings before making a replacement profile. |
| Identify block-form requirements | The current echo-mode subset excludes field attributes and block mode. An application requiring them needs a different validated solution. |
| Check width and peripherals | 132-column layouts, programmable function keys and printer functions are outside this subset. Include them in the requirements inventory rather than assuming support. |

Bring the host address, selected terminal type, keyboard map and the steps that reproduce a problem to a [proof of value](https://wndsoftware.com/proof-of-value). Distinguish a simulated sample from a customer-host result in the test record. See [supported systems and profile limits](https://wndsoftware.com/supported-systems) for the current release scope.

### Keyboard and host workflow

IBM 3151 is an ASCII display profile, distinct from IBM mainframe 3270 and IBM i 5250. Select the 3151 echo-mode profile only when it matches the current application's configuration. Test the keys that move through the actual application and check when typed characters appear on screen. Record the current echo setting, character presentation and submission action so a readable sign-on screen is not mistaken for a complete application test.

### When a screen or key behaves differently

If entry is duplicated or missing, compare local and host echo expectations before changing the application. Preserve the selected profile, last action and a fictional reproduction of the affected screen. A 3270 PROG code is not a general diagnostic for an ASCII 3151 session. Keep transport failures separate from display or keyboard differences, and identify requirements such as a wider layout, programmable keys or printing before choosing a recovery path.

### Replacing an existing terminal client

The current subset excludes 132-column layouts, programmable function keys and printer functions. An existing IBM 3151-capable client may use those features even when the first sample form does not. Inventory them during the migration assessment and retain the working client for any unproved workflow. Use the supplied echo-mode software host as a repeatable baseline, then compare the actual application on the operating system your users will run.
