# Offline Mainframe Error-Code Hints

### Code hints

When an abend or error message appears on the screen, a one-line hint under it says what the code means and what to do.

Code hints come from the reference built into WND Terminal. They cover system and user abends, CICS abends, TSO, data set and RACF messages, Db2 SQLCODEs and IBM i messages. Nothing leaves the computer and no AI model is used. More  opens Explain this screen with the full reference, and IT can turn hints off with ShowCodeHints .

When an abend, a CICS abend, a TSO or data set message, an SQLCODE or an IBM i message shows up on the screen, WND Terminal puts a one-line hint under the screen with the code, what it means and what to do.

- More  (Ctrl+Shift+H) opens Explain this screen, with the full reference for every code on the screen.
- Ask WND  asks why it happened and works the session to find out, when your organization has Ask WND on.
- ×  hides the hint for that code in this session.

The hint comes from the reference built into WND Terminal: system and user abends, CICS abends, TSO, data set and RACF messages, Db2 SQLCODEs, and IBM i CPF, CPD, MCH, CEE, RPG and SQL messages. Nothing leaves the computer, no AI model is used and nothing is logged.

Because it appears without anyone asking, the hint is stricter than Explain. A code that could be something else on an ordinary screen, such as `U1000` or `S001` in a list of part numbers, only counts when the screen also says it’s an abend (`ABEND`, `COMPLETION CODE`, `IEF450I` and the like).

#### Does a code hint use AI?

No. The hint comes from the reference built into WND Terminal. Nothing leaves the computer, no AI model is used and nothing is logged.


#### Will it mistake a part number for an abend?

It’s stricter than Explain. A code that could be something else on an ordinary screen, such as U1000 or S001 in a list of part numbers, only counts when the screen also says it’s an abend.
